NORTHAMPTON - Police are investigating an "unattended death" in a wooded area off King and Barrett streets Wednesday, after a pedestrian found a man hanging from a tree.
According to police, a resident walking along the Northampton Bike Path called police at 3:20 p.m. after noticing a man hanging from a tree in the woods near Stop & Shop. Police quickly responded to the scene, located down a side trail running between the bike path and Coachlight Condominiums on Barrett Street. Local and state police cruisers lined the bike path, and officers blocked the entry to the side trail.
An ambulance was called to the scene, and paramedics pronounced the man dead soon afterward, police said.
Police did not release the name or age of the man Wednesday night, pending notification of his family. Although the cause of death remains under investigation, police said they did not suspect foul play.
