Head on collision in Pelham sends two women to hospital

PELHAM - Two women escaped serious injury Thursday after their car was struck head-on by a motorist who lost control on an icy patch of road, police reported.

Jonathan Downer, 23, a student at the University of Massachusetts, was traveling west on North Valley Road at approximately 2:30 p.m., when his 2003 Dodge Durango skidded on ice and slid across the yellow line into oncoming traffic, police said.

Downer's Durango then slammed head-on into a 2001 Volvo station wagon driven by Lisa Shea, 49, of Springfield. Shea and her passenger, Jodie Rodar, were transported to Cooley Dickinson Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

Both vehicles sustained heavy front-end damage and were destroyed, said acting police Chief Gary Thomann.

A hospital spokeswoman reported that Shea and Rodar had been treated and released Thursday night.
