Suhoski gets contract extension

By Owen Boss
AYER — After granting Town Administrator Shaun A. Suhoski an “above standard” rating during the town’s annual performance review, The Board of Selectman recently announced a three-year contract extension that would keep him at his position through June 30, 2011, setting his annual salary at $84,376 in fiscal 2009.

“I would like to thank the board of selectmen for their support, confidence, and leadership on behalf of the community,” said Mr. Suhoski, who was appointed to the town’s top administrative post in January 2006 after serving as the director of community and economic development for eight years.

Board chairwoman Carolyn L. McCreary said Mr. Suhoski has proven to be an invaluable asset to the town, and the contract extension is a direct reflection of the good work he has done over the past three years.

“He is great,” said Ms. McCreary. “Municipal budgets are really difficult to put together, there is a structural deficit in municipal budgets and he has done a really good job of pulling all of those factors together.”

Among the projects that Mr. Suhoski had made priority during his first term was to improve communication sharing between departments to work out some of the town’s larger budget issues, something that Ms. McCreary said was particularly successful.

“He brought the School Committee, Finance Committee and selectman together to work on our budget issues,” said Ms. McCreary. “He developed a sustainable plan for our health insurance costs that have been just out of sight, through a project that he called the ‘town’s fiscal health plan.’”

When making their final decision, Ms. McCreary said it was Mr. Suhoski’s innovative approach to solving problems that affected the board’s decision.

“The board recognizes Shaun’s ability to communicate with the public and town employees, his integrity and his leadership in problem-solving,” said Ms. McCreary. “We look forward to continuing our partnership.”
