Region braces for latest winter storm

As another ice storm approaches the region, the National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for portions of southwestern and south central Massachusetts.

The storm warning will remain in effect from 11 p.m. tonight to midnight Wednesday.

According to the service, snowfall is expected to develop across the region tonight, but "warmer air aloft" will force the snow to change over to a wintry mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain sometime between 2 and 5 a.m. The changeover is expected to create one-quarter to one-half an inch of ice on area roadways, making for a treacherous morning commute.

The service is predicting the storm will produce anywhere from 3 to 5 inches of snow and is also warning of potentially slick roadways into Wednesday night, when the mixed precipitation is expected to change back to snow or snow showers.
