Mount honors outstanding students

By Owen Boss
LEOMINSTER — Mount Wachusett Community College honored the academic achievements of outstanding students at the gala “Evening of Excellence” dinner Thursday at the Four Points by Sheraton in Leominster.

Assistant Dean of Students and coordinator of the event Gregory Clement said that the event allows the college the opportunity to honor the students who have either excelled academically during their tenure at the college, or provided the surrounding area with community service projects.

“The Evening of Excellence is one of our most exciting nights for the college,” said Mr. Clement. “For most of the people this is a night to bring their parents or families; it gives them the opportunity to meet faculty and staff that may not be in their area of discipline, and it’s a way for the college to showcase what great students we have.”

Mount President Daniel Asquino said that there were more parents than usual attending this year’s event, and that including students’ families is an important part of rewarding their many achievements because they play an intricate role in their academic success.

“This is the students’ night to celebrate the many things that they have accomplished,” said Mr. Asquino. “Most of these students never would have made it through without the help of their family, so its important that we have them here tonight.”

Among the many award recipients was Hubbardston resident Tricia Rathbun, who is set to graduate from the college this semester. Ms. Rathbun received a scholarship at the event for displaying academic excellence in the field of medical assisting.

“It’s definitely an honor to receive the scholarship,” said Ms. Rathbun. “I’ve been recognized for academic excellence, but I have done community service in my time as a medical assistant.”

She added that she hopes to use the education she gained during her time at the Mount to continue her career in medical assisting within the field of forensic nursing.

The event honored students with a number of awards including: Curriculum Awards, Memorial Awards, the Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society Recognition Awards, various Foundation Scholarships and Outstanding Achievement Awards.
