Words of wisdom from Dr. Seuss

GARDNER — The Gardner High School Class of 2008 stepped off the stage and into the next stage of their lives Saturday night, as the school’s 211 graduates received their diplomas. The ceremony included speeches from schools Superintendent Dr. Carol Daring, interim Principal Anthony Gansis and Mayor Mark Hawke. Mr. Hawke told graduating seniors that it is important in life to become involved with community programs, and stressed that they go out into the world and find ways to become active members of society. “Get involved and stay involved, this can be at college or in your home community,” said Mr. Hawke. “You can get involved by volunteering at a nonprofit, serving on a board or commission, attending a neighborhood cleanup day, assisting at a nursing home, reading to children at a library, there really is not shortage of ways.” At the end of his speech, Mr. Hawke left the seniors with an appropriate life quote from Dr. Seuss, which illustrated the changes that come with the acquisition of a high school diploma. “You have brains in your head, you have feet in your shoes, you can steer yourself in any direction you choose. You’re on your own, and you know what to do, You are the guy, who’ll decided where to go,” said Mr. Hawke.
